Meals that Heal Launch at Ronald McDonald House Hamilton

https://i2.wp.com/www.satelliteonline.ca/wp-content/uploads/ronald-mcdonald-house.jpgOn Tuesday, November 5, 2013 – Ronald McDonald House Hamilton (RMHH) will be joined by women’s Olympic gold medalist, Cassie Campbell.  She arrives to celebrate the launch of the new Meals that Heal program.  Cassie and friends (representatives from the Hamilton Huskies Hockey 15AA team) will be preparing and serving a Bistro Breakfast to families staying at the House and allowing opportunities to meet and connect with the House community.  The team is made up of 15 year old players who’s team Captain, Dave Landry, encourages to give back to the community whenever possible.  This will be a great experience for his team members.

Some of our Go Cooking friends will remember Chef Shawn Rocchi in our kitchen.  Chef Shawn has found a home at RMHH as the Culinary Manager.  This program is unique to the Hamilton location and is a pilot program for other RM Houses throughout North America. The Meals that Heal program is available to community groups and organizations who might wish to sponsor a meal for the families who are affected by critical illness of their children and undergoing care at McMaster University Children’s Hospital. This program is the first of its kind amongst the 333 Ronald McDonald Houses worldwide and has been identified as a best practice in family-centred care.

Chef Shawn prepares a nightly diner with assistance from community support and volunteers.  The program has served over 12,000 meals and saved families approximately $400,000 in out-of-pocket expenses.  The Meals-that-Heal program is offered to all guest families free of charge and is designed to be fully supported by the community partners and volunteers.
